Introducing the Sixth Annual
Rutgers-Newark
Three Minute Thesis Competition
Created in 2008 by the University of Queensland,
the Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT®) has become an
acclaimed national and international research competition.
The P3 Collaboratory and the Graduate School–Newark
invite doctoral students to present their research
at our inaugural 3MT competition as we partner with
universities across the globe to enhance scholarly
communication, promote publicly-engaged research, and
celebrate our students’ outstanding work.
We also invite masters students to present their research
at our inaugural THREESIS competition. Created by NYU,
THREESIS offers masters degree candidates the opportunity to
hone their research communication skills while showcasing
their scholarly accomplishments. We are pleased to host
this contest in conjunction with the 3MT.
WHY 3MT?
The 3MT competition will teach you how to communicate effectively to academics and non-academics alike, preparing you to present your research at scholarly conferences and to take part in both academic and professional job markets.
The competition also promotes the value of doctoral research to a wider community and strengthens scholarly engagement and collaboration across the disciplines.
Eligibility & Competition Structure
3MT: Eligible students must be active Graduate School–Newark
Ph.D. candidates who have post-qualifying status by the date
of their first 3MT presentation.

Interested students should attend the following:
3MT presentations are limited to three
minutes. A single static PowerPoint slide is required.
Students will need to register for the competition
online and participate in one of two preliminary rounds.
Participants are expected to sign a photo and
video release form as part of the application.
All competitions will happen via Zoom!
The top five candidates from the preliminary rounds
will advance to the final round of competition, which
will take place via Zoom during the week of
April 18 (RESEARCH WEEK)!

The first place winner will be invited to compete in a
regional 3MT or THREESIS competition hosted by the
Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS).

*Please note that preparation workshops are not mandatory for interested participants. However, it is strongly recommended that students attend one of our workshops.
Students that are not interested in 3MT but would like to further develop their scholarly communication and presentation skills are also welcome to attend either workshop.
